Submitted by David Klenk, communications graduate assistant

Layers… seen and unseen Paintings by Ruthe Wyman will be on display in the Eva G. Farris Gallery from June 15-30, 2023. In honor of this exhibit in the gallery, Moreover asked Ruthe some questions regarding her art and experience at Thomas More.

Can you share with us how you got into the world of art?

My high school art teacher was most influential in leading me into a life full of art.  She allowed me to assist her with other art classes instead of enduring study halls.  She was instrumental in my choice to attend Thomas More and become an art teacher.

How did your time at Thomas More impact your work as an artist?

My time at Thomas More impacted my work as an artist in all ways positively.  Again, I credit the teachers. The professors were all top notch in their fields. They encouraged creative expression and excellence in your work.  The class sizes were small which allowed for personal attention.  The liberal arts education definitely opened my mind to a deeper way of thinking.

Do you have any favorite memories from the time you spent at Thomas More?

I have many favorite memories from the time I spent at Thomas More.  The art buildings were separated from the main academic buildings, so art students had their own space to flourish. Friends from then are still friends today. We haven’t changed a bit!

What is the inspiration for your Alumni Art Summer Series exhibit?

The inspiration for “Layers…seen and unseen” was to exhibit paintings that use multiple layers in the process. Some are textural; some are transparent.  Some are in my mind; some are in the title.

What has been the most challenging part of creating the work in your exhibit?

The most challenging part of creating the work in my exhibit has been deciding which paintings to include in regard to size and cohesiveness.

What accomplishment or piece are you the proudest of as an artist?

I am most proud of the accomplishment of being told that I have a style of painting that is unique and recognizable as mine.

Do you have any other current or upcoming projects?
