What to expect from college registration days and why attending your first-year orientation matters
You’ve been accepted to college, picked out some school gear, and started imagining the possibilities your degree will open to you. But before you dive into classes and college life, there’s an important next step – college registration and orientation. If you’re wondering, “Do I really need to go to these events?” the answer is a definite yes.
“Registration and orientation days are essential for incoming students,” says Kayla Steltenkamp, Ph.D., director of First-Year Experience and assistant professor of education for Thomas More University. “They ensure you’re set up for success from day one, giving you access to university resources, IDs, technology, and more. It’s also the perfect time to ask questions, ease any nerves, and get excited for the upcoming year.”
First, what happens at college registration and orientation?
Registration days are all about getting your academic life on track. You’ll set up your first-semester schedule, choose classes that fit your goals, and make sure you’re on track with any major or general education requirements. You’ll likely take care of some practical things too, such as getting your student ID, setting up your student email, and learning about university tools and resources.
Orientation offers support beyond the academic experience. It’s designed to help you transition into college life – socially, emotionally, and practically. You’ll get to know your campus, meet other incoming students, connect with professors and staff, and learn about opportunities to get involved. Most schools will also introduce you to important topics such as student life, campus safety, and support services.
Why is attending so important?
College can be a big change, and your registration and orientation days can help ease that transition. This is your chance to build connections early, ask questions, and learn about expectations both in and out of the classroom.
“Registration is more formal, making sure everything is set up and ready to go. Orientation, on the other hand, is all about fun,” Steltenkemp says. “It includes team-building activities and events that help students build a sense of community and feel part of campus before everyone returns the following week.”
Tips for making the most of registration and orientation:
- Ask questions. No question is too small. Whether it’s about dining hall access or requirements for your major, now is the time to get answers.
- Get involved. Participate in tours, games, and info sessions. It might feel a little outside your comfort zone, but it’s the best way to meet people and feel at home.
- Bring family if invited. Many colleges offer family sessions to help your support system understand your next steps, too.
Remember: college isn’t just about academics, it’s about personal growth, new opportunities, and discovery. Registration and orientation are your first steps into an exciting new chapter. Here’s to making the most of them! #MakeItMore
