FAFSA: Your Starting Point for College Financial Aid

When it comes to paying for college, understanding the financial aid options available to you is crucial. Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) is the first step to take to unlock a wide range of resources to help pay for college.

What is FAFSA®?

FAFSA® is the free application you complete at StudentAid.gov to determine eligibility for financial aid. It’s what the federal government, states, and most colleges and universities use to determine your eligibility for financial aid, including federal grants, student loans, scholarships, and work-study opportunities. If you want to access financial assistance, the FAFSA® will be your starting point.

Why should I complete the FAFSA® every year?

Many students and families are surprised to learn that FAFSA® isn’t a one-time ask. You must complete it every academic year you plan to attend college. Here’s why:

  • Your financial situation may change. Family income, the number of people in your household, or other circumstances can affect the amount of aid you are eligible to receive.
  • College costs can vary year to year. Tuition adjustments, housing choices, and course fees may impact your financial needs.
  • Some aid is first-come, first-served. Submitting your FAFSA® early each year increases your chances of getting the best possible aid package.

Even if you think you may not qualify for need-based aid, fill out the FAFSA® anyway. Many scholarships – both from the university and external organizations – require it as part of their application process.

When should I apply?

FAFSA® typically opens each year on October 1 for the following academic year. For the 2026-27 school year, the FAFSA® form will be available starting October 1, 2025. It’s best to submit it as early as possible because some aid programs have limited funds.

Before you start, you will need to create your FSA ID (verified account username and password). Completing the FAFSA® each year is a crucial step toward making college affordable. By taking a little time now, you open the door to valuable resources that can help make your dream school a reality.
