Tuskegee University Golden Voices Choir Visits TMC
On Saturday, March 8, 2014 the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel hosted one of its largest crowds to date. The award-winning Tuskegee University Golden Voices Choir from Alabama attracted many visitors who were making their first trip to the Thomas More College campus. The Grammy-level collegiate choir is made up of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors from Tuskegee University, which is 40 miles east of Montgomery. Led by Dr. Wayne A. Barr, director of the choir and choral activities since 2001, the Choir shared beautiful music from the African-American tradition. A few of the pieces performed at the concert included: The Lord is My Light, Beautiful Savior, Hold Fast to Dreams, I Want Jesus to Walk With Me and For Every Mountain.
The Choir is steeped in more than a century of rich choral tradition and serves as an inspiring model to both current and prospective TMC students of what can be accomplished in any ensemble during one’s undergraduate non-music-major years. In addition to the main concert, a quartet from the Tuskegee Choir, as a special treat for spectators of the Thomas More College women’s basketball game also scheduled that evening, sang the National Anthem previous to the Lady Saints taking on John Carroll in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
The concert at Thomas More College was the first stop for the Tuskegee University Golden Voices Concert Choir on their spring break tour which included seven performances. After leaving Crestview Hills, the Choir headed to Cleveland. They wrapped up their tour in Nashville on March 14.
