Navigating a College Transfer? Helpful Tips from Students Who’ve Been There
Transferring colleges can be an opportunity that leads to growth, both academically and personally. Sometimes, however, considering a transfer can feel overwhelming, whether the motivation is finding a better academic fit, improving career opportunities, campus culture, location, or other personal reasons. There are many important considerations to research, such as how your credits will transfer, securing financial aid, and how the change will fit into your needs and goals.
Knowing that this decision can be daunting, we asked some Thomas More transfer students to share their best advice for students considering changing schools.
Lawson Trapp, a communications major, addresses the stigma that students can sometimes feel when it comes to making the leap. “Transferring isn’t a bad thing, sometimes things just don’t work out and you need to try another campus,” Trapp says.
“One piece of advice…is to keep an open mind and embrace change,” says Angelina Finnerty, who is now studying exercise science and law at Thomas More. She adds, “Moving to a new school can be very challenging in all aspects, socially and academically, but being adaptable and open to new experiences can help you find your place and make the most out of your new step in life.”
“One piece of advice I would give to future transfer students is to get involved on campus early,” says Collin Howard, a student in the Robert W. Plaster College of Business pursuing a business administration degree. “Joining clubs, attending events, or connecting with classmates and professors can help you build a support network and make the transition smoother. Engaging with your new community will not only enrich your college experience but also help you feel more connected to the campus, making it easier to adapt both academically and socially.”
“Don’t be afraid of talking with your professors,” says Hannah Farrel, an art major at Thomas More. “So far, every one of my Thomas More professors have been understanding and [are] pushing me to my best.”
For Collin Howard, a biology student at Thomas More, his advice is straightforward: “Don’t stress out about it, it’s not as scary as you think.”
