TMC to Launch Summer Art Portfolio Program Series for High School Students and Recent Graduates
CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY, May 17, 2013—Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky., is offering an Art Portfolio Preparation Workshop Series to high school juniors, seniors and graduates who are preparing for a college level art program . The series is designed to strengthen students’ portfolios, while introducing them to career choices in the visual arts. These classes will push students far beyond the high school art experience by expanding their use of materials in an advanced and challenging studio experience with a community of other artists.
Workshops consist of three, one-week sessions held at Thomas More College. Each session meets five days a week from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Students may enroll in all three sessions or choose an individual week from the following:
Drawing from Life | June 3 – 7
Students will have the opportunity to draw from complex still-life arrangements and on-site landscape – weather permitting. Drawing materials such as Conte Crayon, Charcoal and Sumi ink will also be introduced. $185/week session
Painting from Life (acrylic) | June 10 – 14
Students will have the opportunity to paint from complex still-life arrangements and on-site landscape – weather permitting. Student will also be introduced to a variety of alternative painting surfaces, basics of surface preparation, stretched canvas construction, acrylic gels, mediums and varnishes. Final day of workshop will feature a live model. $255/week session
Figure Drawing (model) | June 24 – 28
Students will have the opportunity to investigate the figure in space using a live model. Focus is primarily on developing fundamental design elements and principals, and drawing methods and process, which include rapid sketching, gestural line, subtractive drawing and use of value when describing the figure. Students will be immersed in the use of charcoal, conte crayon, gouache and a variety of mixed media. $285/week session
Thomas More College Art Department faculty member Elizabeth Neal, instructor of drawing, painting and illustration will teach the workshops. Ms. Neal has an MFA in painting from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio and a BFA in illustration from the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
